2020 Hollywood Horror Movies List

A Quiet Place: Part II is an upcoming American horror film that is the sequel to A Quiet Place (2018). The sequel film, written and directed by John Krasinski, stars Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprising their roles from the first film. Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou also join the cast. Talks for a sequel began in April 2018 following the box-office success of the first film. By August 2018, Krasinski was writing the film, and he was hired in February 2019 to direct. Production took place in Western New York from June 2019 to September 2019. Paramount Pictures plans to release A Quiet Place: Part II in theaters on March 20, 2020.

3) The Grudge


The Grudge is an upcoming 2020 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, and produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise. A reboot of the 2004 American remake of the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge (both of which were directed by Takashi Shimizu), the film's events take place at the same time as those of the 2004 film,[5] and is the fourth installment in The Grudge film series. The film stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver. A sequel was announced in 2011, with a release date of 2013 or 2014. In March 2014, it was officially announced that a reboot was in the works, with Buhler set to write the script. In July 2017, filmmaker Nicolas Pesce was hired for rewrites, based on Buhler's script, and to direct the film. Principal photography on the film began on May 7, 2018, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and finished on June 23, 2018. The Grudge is scheduled to be released in the United States on January 3, 2020, by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

4) Halloween Kills


Halloween Kills is an upcoming American slasher film directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Danny McBride and Scott Teems. It is a sequel to 2018's Halloween and the twelfth installment in the Halloween franchise. The film stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle reprising their roles as Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, with James Jude Courtney also portraying Myers. Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Dylan Arnold, Kyle Richards, Charles Cyphers and Nancy Stephens reprise their roles from the 2018 and 1978 films, and also stars Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Longstreet. The film is produced by Jason Blum through his Blumhouse Productions banner, alongside Malek Akkad and Bill Block. Before the release of the 2018 film, McBride in June 2018 confirmed that he and Green had originally intended to pitch two films that would be shot back-to-back, and then decided against it, waiting to see the reaction to the first film. By February 2019, Teems was hired to co-write the script. The film's title was announced in July 2019, along with its sequel. Principal photography commenced in September 2019 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Halloween Kills is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 16, 2020, by Universal Pictures in North America, and Paramount Pictures in other territories. A sequel, Halloween Ends, is scheduled to be released on October 15, 2021.

5) The New Mutants


The New Mutants is an upcoming American horror film in the superhero genre, based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name and distributed by 20th Century Fox.[3] It was initially developed to be an installment of the X-Men film series. The film is being directed by Josh Boone from a screenplay by himself and Knate Lee, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga. In the film, a group of young mutants held in a secret facility fight to save themselves. Boone and Lee first began work on the film after Boone completed The Fault in Our Stars (2014), the pair having been fans of the New Mutants growing up. They pitched a potential film trilogy to X-Men producer Simon Kinberg, and in May 2015 were officially signed on to the project. Taylor-Joy and Williams were rumored to be cast in March 2016, and were confirmed over a year later when the rest of the cast filled out. Filming took place in Boston from July to September 2017, primarily at Medfield State Hospital, with an April 2018 release in mind. The film was then delayed for several years while reshoots to make the film more frightening were planned. The New Mutants is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 3, 2020, a date set by Disney after it acquired Fox and its assets.

6) Antlers

 
Antlers is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed by Scott Cooper from a screenplay by C. Henry Chaisson, Nick Antosca, and Cooper. It is based upon Antosca's short story "The Quiet Boy", which was published in Guernica, and stars Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, Jeremy T. Thomas, Graham Greene, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane, and Amy Madigan. The film is scheduled to be released on April 17, 2020, by Fox Searchlight Pictures.

7) The Boy 2


Brahms: The Boy II is an upcoming American horror film directed by William Brent Bell and written by Stacey Menear. A sequel to the 2016 film The Boy, it stars Katie Holmes, Ralph Ineson, Owain Yeoman, and Christopher Convery. It is scheduled to be released on February 21, 2020, by STX Entertainment.

8) The Turning

The Turning

The Turning is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed by Floria Sigismondi, written by Carey W. Hayes, Chad Hayes, and Jade Bartlett. It is a modern adaptation of the 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.[3] Steven Spielberg also serves as an executive producer. It stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, and Joely Richardson. The film first entered development in March 2016 and was described as a passion project for Steven Spielberg, who wanted to be involved in a horror film again. The film adaptation went through two phases of production: first as Haunted with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo attached as director, then renamed as The Turning with Sigismondi. The film is scheduled to be released on January 24, 2020 by Universal Pictures.

9) Underwater


Underwater is an upcoming 2020 American science fiction horror film directed by William Eubank and written by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad. The film is produced by Chernin Entertainment and stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and T.J. Miller. Underwater is scheduled to be released on January 10, 2020, by 20th Century Fox.

10) Gretel and Hansel


Gretel & Hansel (also known as Gretel & Hansel: A Grim Fairy Tale) is an upcoming 2020 American dark fantasy horror film based on the German folklore tale Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm. The film is directed by Oz Perkins, produced by Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Dan Kagan, and the screenplay is written by Perkins and Rob Hayes. Sophia Lillis and Sam Leakey portray the main characters respectively, alongside Charles Babalola, Jessica De Gouw and Alice Krige. In the film, Gretel and Hansel enter a dark wood in order to find work and food to assist their poor parents. They stumble upon the home of a witch. It was announced in October 2018 that Lillis would star in Gretel and Hansel, a film adaptation based on the German folklore Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, with Perkins directing the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hayes. Casting call on the film began from November 2018 to April 2019. Filming on the film started in November 2018 and wrapped in Dublin, Ireland. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on January 31, 2020, by Orion Pictures through United Artists Releasing.

11) The Invisible Man


The Invisible Man is an upcoming 2020 American science fiction psychological horror film written and directed by Leigh Whannell. The film is a very loose modern adaptation of both the novel of the same name by H. G. Wells and a remake of the 1933 film adaptation of the same name. It stars Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid and Harriet Dyer. Development of a new Invisible Man film began as early as 2007, when David S. Goyer was hired to write the screenplay. The project was announced to be revived as part of Universal's shared cinematic universe in 2016, intended to consist of their classic monsters, with Johnny Depp cast as the titular role in the film, with Ed Solomon writing the screenplay. However, once The Mummy was released with negative critical reception and box office returns that were deemed by the studio to cancel the project and other films in development. Later, Blumhouse Productions obtained the rights and produced a new film, with Whannell serving as director and writer. Filming began in July 2019 and wrapped in September 2019 in Sydney, Australia. The film is scheduled to release in the United States on February 28, 2020, by Universal Pictures.

12) Last Night in Soho


Last Night in Soho is an upcoming psychological horror film directed by Edgar Wright and written by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns. It stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, and Terence Stamp. It is scheduled to be released on 25 September 2020, by Focus Features.

13) Fantasy Island


Fantasy Island is an upcoming 2020 American supernatural horror film[1] directed by Jeff Wadlow and written by Jillian Jacobs, Chris Roach, and Wadlow, based on ABC's 1977 television series of the same name created by Gene Levitt. It stars Michael Peña, Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang, Ryan Hansen, and Michael Rooker.[2] Jason Blum produces the film through his Blumhouse Productions banner. Fantasy Island is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 14, 2020, by Sony Pictures Releasing.

14) Candyman 

Candyman is an upcoming American horror film directed by Nia DaCosta, written by Jordan Peele and Win Roselfeld, and co-produced by Peele, Rosenfeld, and Ian Cooper. It will be a direct sequel to original 1992 film and stars Tony Todd as the title character, alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo. Universal Pictures has scheduled Candyman for a release on June 12, 2020.

15) Malignant


Malignant is an upcoming American horror film directed by James Wan and written by Wan and Ingrid Bisu. It is based on Wan's 2011 graphic novel Malignant Man. The film stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Abel, George Young, Maddie Hasson, Michole Briana White and Jacqueline McKenzie. Malignant is scheduled to be released on August 14, 2020, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

16) Antebellum


Antebellum is an upcoming 2020 American thriller drama film written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. The film stars Janelle Monáe, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, and Gabourey Sidibe. Antebellum is scheduled to be released on April 24, 2020, by Lionsgate.

17) The Organ Donor


The Organ DonorThe Organ Donor is an upcoming American horror film. The film will serve as the ninth installment in the Saw franchise. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, from a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, based on a story by Chris Rock. The film stars Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols. The film is scheduled to be released on May 15, 2020, in the United States by Lionsgate Films.

19) Morbius


Morbius is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is intended to be the second film in Sony's Marvel Universe. The film is being directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and stars Jared Leto in the title role alongside Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. After announcing plans for a new shared universe of films inspired by Spider-Man characters beginning with Venom (2018), Sony was revealed to be developing one based on Morbius. Sazama and Sharpless had written a script by November 2017, with Leto and Espinosa officially joining in June 2018. Work began in earnest at the end of the year with further casting, ahead of a production start in February 2019 in London. Filming was set to take 12 weeks, and was confirmed to have completed by June 2019. Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 31, 2020.

20) Ghostbusters: Afterlife

 

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (titled Ghostbusters: Legacy or Ghostbusters: From Beyond[1] in some markets) is an upcoming American fantasy comedy film directed by Jason Reitman and written by Reitman and Gil Kenan. It stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Logan Kim and Celeste O'Connor, while Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts reprise their roles from the original films. It is the direct sequel to Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989) and the fourth film, overall, in the Ghostbusters franchise. Set 30 years after Ghostbusters II, a single mother and her two children move to a small town, where they discover their family's connection and the town's secrets. A third Ghostbusters film had been in various stages of development since Ghostbusters II in 1989. After Murray refused to commit to the project, and after the death of cast member Harold Ramis in 2014, Sony instead produced a reboot. After the film underperformed at the box office, Reitman began developing a direct sequel to the original films. The new cast members were announced by July 2019, while the members from the original films signed on two months later. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is scheduled for release in the United States on July 10, 2020, by Columbia Pictures through Sony Pictures Releasing.

21) Run Sweetheart Run


Run Sweetheart Run is an upcoming American horror thriller film written and directed by Shana Feste. It stars Ella Balinska, Pilou Asbaek, Clark Gregg, Aml Ameen, Dayo Okeniyi, Betsy Brandt and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Jason Blum is serving as a producer under his Blumhouse Productions banner. It will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2020.

Wrong Turn: The Foundation is an upcoming German-American horror film directed by Mike P. Nelson and written by Alan B. McElroy. The film is a reboot and the seventh installment of the Wrong Turn film series.

24) The Empty Man


The Empty Man is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed and written by David Prior, based on the Boom! Studios' graphic novel of same name. The film stars James Badge Dale, Samantha Logan, Stephen Root, Joel Courtney, Marin Ireland, and Aaron Poole.

Fear Street is an upcoming 2020 American horror film directed by Leigh Janiak and based on the Fear Street series by R. L. Stine. It is set to become the first film in a trilogy that will be released one month after another.

The Night House is an upcoming American horror thriller film, directed by David Bruckner, from a screenplay by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It stars Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Stacy Martin, Evan Jonigkeit, and Vondie Curtis-Hall. It will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020.
